There is a double head stone in the Rehoboth Methodist Church cemetery in Barlow, Mississippi that is inscribed “Mary Frances Reynolds – Henry Mel Mullins” but there are dates only on the Mary Frances Reynolds side.   It is common in that cemetery for double head stones to have inscribed dates of birth and death for only the first of the married couple to die.

Mary Frances Reynolds, wife of Henry Mel Mullins, and her oldest son, J R Mullins, are buried in the Rehoboth cemetery along with her father (James M Reynolds), her stepmother (Margaret E Lupo Reynolds), her brother (James P Reynolds), her brother’s wives and a stepsister (Willie Reynolds).   There are no other Mullins’ there.

I have seen a receipt dated June 22, 1905 for a coffin purchased from a business in Union Church, Mississippi, operating as Carnes & Mullins Caskets, Coffins, Furniture and Hardware.   The owners are listed as C C Carnes and H M Mullins.   Union Church was a small town a few miles northeast of the farm where Henry Mel was raised.

In the 1880 Census of Copiah County (Film #654, house #260, family #266) Henry Mel, who was still living with his parents at age 30, listed his occupation as “sewing machine salesman”.   G N Mullins stated that after his father moved to Osyka he was a traveling salesman who sold sewing machines out of a wagon.   I have no evidence that Henry Mel ever had a retail store in the Osyka area.

The roll of Charley Clark’s Rifles, Company “A”, 12th Mississippi Regiment of the Army of Northern Virginia and drawn from the community of Union Church in Jefferson and Copiah Counties lists William Mullins and Elijah Mullins. James Mullins had a son named William Henry Mullins who would have been 41 in 1860 and another named Elisha Flowers Mullins who would have been 31 in 1860. He also had grandsons named William, aged 27 in 1860, and another named Elijah, aged 26 in 1860. Those listed with Charley Clark’s rifles are more likely to have been the grandsons rather than the sons, i.e. William Henry and Elisha Flowers Mullins.

Further information about James B Mullins:

James B Mullins, son of William Henry Mullins, married Georgia Ann Cato in 1875. There is a grave marker in the Meadville Cemetery in Franklin County inscribed with the name J B Mullins born 1840 and wife Georgia Cato Mullins born 1848.   G N Mullins stated that his uncle James died in an old soldier’s home in northern Mississippi (but not in Jackson).

Further information about Robert E Mullins:

The 1880 Census of Copiah Co enumerated a single man, aged 24 by the name of Robt Mullins (Family #291, Rose Hill Precinct page 33, Copiah page 17) who gave his occupation as “student”. He was living alone. His older brother, William R Mullins, is widowed, living with his parents and employed as a “book keeper” while Henry Mel Mullins, also single and living with his parents, is employed as a “sewing machine salesman”. This was an unusual group of young men given that almost all of their neighbors were farmers.

Further information about James P Mullins:

A soldier named James P Mullins served with Company F, 1st Battalion Mississippi Infantry and is buried at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Simpson County, Mississippi.

Burial                           Mullins Cemetery, Copiah Co, Ms

            Jefferson Co, Ms, Wills:

Parker Carradine died March 1819 and left a will. In the will he stated that his wife was Letticia (died May 1824) and his wife’s mother was Mary Keith.   He listed three brothers, i.e. 1. George Carradine with the following children: Eliza, Martha, Francis, George and James; 2. John Carradine with the following children: John and Jench and 3. Richard Carradine with one son named Parker.

There is a Mullins Cemetery between Hazlehurst and the Sand Hill/Stronghope communities of Copiah County. It is 14.5 miles west of Hazelhurst on Hwy 28, 1.5 miles north from the highway on Decell Lane and about three miles east of Decell Lane in deep woods. There are supposed to be five people buried there. The markers are:

            W H Mullins father                   15 Nov 1819 / 31 Jy 1918

            Louise J Carradine Mullins        18 Jy 1839 / 9 Oct 1912

            Oscar “Jack” Mullins                19 Jan 1875 / 30 Jy 1920

            F B Mullins                               1 Dec 1859 / 9 Aug 1906

The first wife (Frances Emaline Cato Mullins) is also said to be buried here but no marker remains. This is the family of William Henry Mullins. Oscar M Mullins and Frank B Mullins were both sons of Louisa Carradine. Neither died young. Their burial in this cemetery is an indication that they never married and lived on the farm with their parents until they died. Whoever buried Jack probably inherited the farm.

This cemetery marks the spot where Clement Mullins and his three sons, James, Hardy and William N, settled about 1820. By 1850 there were seven farms belonging to Mullins families and inhabited by 48 people in a tight cluster in this area. The church and cross-roads store at Barlow is three miles north and the Scotch Settlement at Union Church some ten miles to the west.
