Hans (John) Rebsamen immigrated in 1751 with his brother Beat Rebsamen. Hans arrived on the ship “Nptune”. He applied for a “headright” of 50 acres, stating that he was a foreign Protestant. He received a grant on Broad Creek on April 6, 1753 which had been surveyed on May 1, 1752. On May 14, 1764 he received 150 acres on the north side of Broad River and in December 3, 1766, 100 more acres on the Little River.

He filed a claim for services provided during the Revolutionary War stating that on February 15, 1782 he fed nine men and guarded nine horses belonging to the regiment of Colonel Hopkins. On March 13, 1782, he sold bacon and flour to a group belonging to General Pickin’s Regiment.

He was involved in an attempt to incorporate a Lutheran church on Cedar Creek in 1782 and 1787. In 1790 he was living in Camden Dristrict, Richland County, South Carolina and using the name John Turnipseed. The word “rebsamer” apparently translates approximately as “turnipseed”. He died at home in July 1797 leaving a widow and seven children.

Another Turnipseed/Rebsamen family,that of Beat Rebsamen, is often confused with that of Hans or John Rebsamen. Apparently Beat and Hans were brothers and immigrated at the same time. Beat Rebsamen married Margreta Kinsler and lived on the Broad River in Camden District. He died October 1782 and left a will that listed his children. The will gave Hans Beat 150 acres, Jacob Turnipseed 200 acres, Felix Turnipseed 250 acres and his daughter Maria Margreta, who married Phillip Shaver, 150 Pounds in South Carolina currency. Another son, Samuel, is also on the list. Individuals of this family used the same names as that of Hans. They or their descendants left South Carolina and moved west to Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi in what was known as “The Great Migration”.

A genealogy of Hazel Strickland Mullins

The list that follows, entitled “Direct Ancestors of Hazel Strickland”, is a list of her direct ancestors with information about his/her spouse and children. It is only a partial listing of the Strickland Family Groups on the website. Following the list of the direct ancestors is detailed information about 62 Strickland families including many of the direct ancestors of Hazel Mullins.

The numbering system of the Family Groups is the same as that used on ancestor trees in which the number of ancestors doubles in each ascending generation. The ancestors of Hazel Strickland are numbered by generations in ascending order beginning with Hazel Strickland and her siblings as the fourth generation. The generation number is in brackets immediately after the STR prefix. Immediately after the bracketed generation number is a number that I has assigned to each family in that generation. Odd numbered families are paternal ancestors and even numbered families are maternal ancestors.

The symbol “#” is used in the Family Group Number if I have created Family Group files for two or more siblings. The number after the symbol “#” is the birth order of the father of the family. In a few instances there are two or more possible ancestors. These family groups are numbered as A, B, C, etc. where A is the most likely alternative and C is the least likely alternative. For example, there has been a great deal of confusion about the parents of the Henry Strickland (who married Clarissa Varnado) and, as a result, you will see Family Groups STR(9)1A and B, STR(10)1A and B, etc. “A” is the most likely alternative and “B” is a less likely alternative. Family Group files marked “C”, “D”, etc. may contain information about even less likely alternatives.

Sometimes one of the parents died while the other was still young enough to have children. In those instances, the family groups are numbered 1^st and 2^nd. The 1^st and 2^nd refer to the children of the first spouse (1^st) and of the second spouse (2^nd). In the Family Group files the children are listed in order of birth. The birth order is preceded by the symbol “#”. Each child is listed whether or not they reached maturity.

Social scientists often count a generation as 25 years. That is to say, often the parents are twenty-five (25) years older than their middle child. On average a mother is twenty-five years old when she gives birth to her middle child. The women of the Old South married later and so the generations are often separated by thirty years. For example the third generation of the ancestors of Hazel Strickland was born between 1866 and 1873, the fifth generation was born between 1792 and 1814 and the seventh generation was born between 1726 and 1745. Most of the ancestors of this family emigrated from Europe prior to the American Revolution and moved to Mississippi shortly after 1810. Most Strickland descendants now living are the eighth or ninth generation to have lived in the Americas.
