In his book “Bala Chitto Simmons Family” Hansford Simmons states that Samanthe Simmons was a daughter of William Simmons and Nancy Hope. This family lived in the Emerald community of Pike County, Mississippi, in the second half of the 19th Century. They had eight children including Solomon O Simmons, their first child and my ancestor. Samanthe was born in 1836 or 1837 and, according to Hansford Simmons, became blind and never married. She joined the Mt Zion Baptist Church in November 4, 1857 along with her sister Ann and was listed as a member there as late as 1878.

Her father William Simmons died in 1867 and her mother, Nancy, died in 1888 at the home of her son-in-law, William Coney, about five miles east of Magnolia near the old Lovic Felder home. It is likely that Samanthe lived with her mother until her mother died and probably then stayed on in the Coney home with her married sister, Ann.

Two candidates for the parents of the Henry Strickland (who married Clarissa Varnado) have been suggested. The most likely parents were Henry Strickland and Ruth Thompson (Strickland Family STR(9)1A#3). It is likely that two of their children came to the area of Pike County, Mississippi: Elizabeth who married Edward White and Henry who married Clarissa Varnado. It is possible that at least one other son, Jeremiah who married Matilda Varnado, also came from Georgia to Mississippi after the death of Ruth’s first husband, Henry Strickland Senior. There is a discussion of this in the Strickland Family STR(9)1A#3 file. The other suggested parents were Solomon Strickland and Sarah Roberts. This family is discussed in the Strickland Family STR(9)1B file.

This information is taken from the book by Prentiss Knippers titled “Descendants of Thomas Theopolus Knippers and Margaret Deseria Lambert of Holland and South Carolina and Allied Families”. Mr. Knippers lived in Tylertown, Mississippi, and although the book was published privately, libraries in that area should have it.

According to Mr. Knippers, Thomas Theopolis Knippers was born in Amsterdam, Holland around 1801. When he was twelve he was a stow-away on a ship that left Amsterdam for New Orleans. After arriving in New Orleans the captain placed Tom on the auction block to recover the costs of his passage. This was the usual practice and Tom would be indebted to the farmer that paid the debt. Tom became what we call “an indentured servant”. A Mr. Green, who owned a large plantation near Greensburg, Louisiana, paid Tom’s debt to the ship’s captain and Tom went to Mr. Green’s farm to work off his debt.

In 1818 the Lamberth family from Holland arrived in the area. The oldest daughter, Margaret, married Tom Knippers in 1828 and they raised a family of nine children. In 1866 Tom Knippers died and his widow left with most of her children for Sabine Parish in Louisiana. She is bured in Natchitoches Parish near Many, Louisiana.

There are a number of Knippa families in Central Texas. These families are descended from German immigrants to Texas and pronounce the “K”. The descendants of Thomas Knippers are found in southwestern Mississippi and western Louisiana and do not pronounce the “K”.
