This information is from a book by Prentis Knippers of Tylertown, Mississippi.   He published this book privately but it should be available in libraries in the Pike County, Mississippi. It is titled “Descendants of Thomas Theopolus Knippers and Margaret Deseria Lambert of Holland and South Carolina and Allied Families”.

In the Epilogue to his book, Mr. Knippers says that Fred Lamberth left England for Holland where he married Mary Loof. They immigrated to Orangeburg District in South Carolina where their seven children were born. In 1816 the entire family left for Natchez District and got as far as the Warrior River in Alabama. There they rented some land and put in a crop. While the family was on this farm the eldest daughter married the foreman of a neighboring farm. This man, David Hildebrand, was German and managed the slaves on the plantation. During the winter of 1817 the slaves killed David Hildebrand and hid his body in a pile of burning logs.

By then the daughter was pregnant with a son whom she named James N. Hildebrand. After the death of Mr. Hildebrand, the Lamberth family left Alabama and arrived in St. Helena Parish in Louisiana in the spring of 1818. The baby was born in January 25, 1818. A few years later the baby’s mother, Margaret Deseria Lamberth Hildebrand, met Tom Knippers who, like Margaret’s parents, were from Holland. In July 8, 1828 she and Tom were married. Mr. Knippers raised the baby as his son and some church records list him as James Knippers.

This information is from the website “Tennessee Paces” by Melinda Strong on the world-wide web at “genealogy.rootsweb.com”.

Solomon Strickland was a descendant of Mathew Strickland who had left England and settled in Isle of Wright County in Virginia before 1699. Before 1735 Solomon’s father, Jacob Strickland, had left Virginia and settled in Nash or Guilford County in the backwoods of North Carolina. His farm was near where the town of Rocky Mount is today. Solomon Strickland married Amy Pace in Edgecombe Co in North Carolina. In the 1780s, when Solomon was about forty years old, he moved his large family to Elbert County and then to Madison County in Georgia north of where the city of Athens is today. In those days this was on the frontier of white settlement. He was a member of the Old Lystra Primitive Baptist Church there.

Several of Solomon’s children married children of Alexander Thompson who owned a gristmill nearby. Thompson had been born in Philadelphia in 1739 but had married a woman from North Carolina. They moved to Madison County sometime after 1760. Solomon’s oldest son had been killed in a skirmish with the Cherokee Indians soon after the family arrived in the area from North Carolina and his oldest remaining son, Henry Strickland, our ancestor, married one of the Thompson girls.  I have no certain information about the number of children born to Henry and Ruth Strickland but it included Henry and Elizabeth, both of whom moved to Mississippi Territory after 1817, and possible Wilson and James or Jeremiah Strickland. At any rate, after the older Henry died in 1817, his widow left Georgia with her married daughter (Elizabeth White), an unmarried teenage son, i.e.Henry, and her older brother Alexander and his family. Henry Strickland’s brother-in-law, Alexander Thompson, had married one of Henry’s daughters, Eunice, so Ruth was accompanied by at least three of her children in her migration to Mississippi. Another of Henry’s daughters, Mary Cotton, who was married to William Carter, moved first to Jackson County in Georgia and then to St Tammany Parish, Louisiana, but I don’t know if they traveled with Ruth’s party. Mary Carter died in Pike/Lawrence County, Mississippi, in 1830.

Ruth’s brother Alexander and his wife settled in Amite County, Mississippi, where he died in 1824.  His wife, Eunice, lived on their farm until she died in 1845.  In 1823 Ruth married Samuel Bagley in Amite County and moved to his farm in St. Helena Parish just south of the state line where Ruth lived until her death in 1860. In 1829 Ruth’s son, Henry David Strickland, married Clarissa Varnado who had been born in what is now Pike County in 1814. Henry and Clarissa raised a large family on a farm a few miles north of Osyka along the Holmesville to Osyka road. Ruth’s daughter Elizabeth White left with her husband, who was a doctor, for Sabine County in east Texas sometime after 1836. Several of their married children accompanied them to Texas and a number of their descendants reside in east Texas today.

In addition to the two children of Henry and Ruth Strickland known to have accompanied Ruth to Mississippi (Henry and Elizabeth), several other Strickland men arrived in Pike County at about the same time. These include Robert, Allen and Jeremiah Strickland. I do not as yet know their relationship to the family of Henry and Ruth Strickland.
